Review

Denny Townsend, Jazz Times

V
irtually every one of the cuts on the ear with such ease that it to easy to miss the many subtleties of shading and nuance on the first listen. But, as with all things of good taste, repeated exposure reveals the excellence of craftsmanship underlying its beauty.

Hofmann's attack is exacting without being clinical and her choice of material reveals a romantic, playful, and upbeat nature. Classically trained, she also grew up with a father who was a jazz guitarist and the blending of influences is clear. Wofford, Magnussen, and Ferguson clearly enjoy their time together here, and infuse the tunes with their approval of one another's skills. One tune where this harmony is particularly evident is the elegant and heartfelt "But Beautiful”, done ever so delicately, but with rich emotion. Hofmann's tone and breath control here lend just the right warmth to this endearing ballad, and the ensemble clearly states the same vision of the tune.

On “In Walked Bud”, Hofmann carries off the snappy tune with only drum and/or bass accompaniment, filling the spaces with such ease and grace that one scarcely notices the missing chords.

And again, on 'Winter Sheaves", she proves she can swing as hard as any up-tempo tune might require. But, the key to this record is not the formidable technique of Hofmann, or the various players. It is, instead, the spirit of expression they find here. Thoroughly pleasing and relaxed, HOLLY, TAKE NOTEI is a satisfying record to accompany the best of times. You're likely to finish the record in a better mood than you started.
